Is this the biggest showbiz break-up since Brad and Jen or K-Fed and Britney? Reports are flying fast and furious that Chow Yun-fat is pulling out of John Woo's US$80 million film The Battle Of Red Cliff, which only started shooting last weekend outside Beijing. The Putonghua-language historical epic was originally to reunite the trio of Woo, Chow and Tony Leung Chi-wai - last together in 1992's Hard-Boiled. However, Leung had to be replaced by Takeshi Kaneshiro when he dropped out due to work on Ang Lee's drama Lust, Caution. Now it seems Chow has severed himself from the project, too. Various sources claim Chow's legal reps submitted a pull-out request because he got the script only a week before shooting and didn't have enough time to prepare. He noted his lines were in Mandarin, not Cantonese. 'I honestly don't have confidence I can portray my character well,' the long-time muse of John Woo said in a statement. In contrast, a publicist for the film company argued the Hollywood star was making 'dozens' of 'rather unreasonable' demands that exceeded industry standards. Is this the end for Asia's most successful duo? Let's hope for movie fans there will be a better tomorrow.
