What is it? A US skincare brand created by New York dermatologist Steven Victor. He was recently in town to promote his wares and talk about his trademark Bio-Fusion Technology. What is that? Victor says he spent four years in research and development to create this technology. Each product contains multiple 'ingredient complexes that enhance and complement each other'. He says the blend is 'science that works', adding that there isn't one ingredient that does everything. 'To fix skin problems, you need different ingredients. We have such things as soy extracts, vitamins and antioxidants. It's a combination of every aspect of skin requirements.' His Growth Factor Serum (HK$1,600/30ml) contains a substance called ubiquinone to protect the skin from free radicals and generate cell turnover and collagen production. Eye Repair RX (HK$1,600/15ml) includes 'super complexes' that he says stimulate the fine network of capillaries surrounding the eyes. What's his skin care philosophy? Victor says he thinks of skin care as preventative. He sums it up by describing a client who came to him at the age of 25. When he asked her why she was consulting him so regularly at such a young age, she explained that her mother didn't start doing so until the damage was done when she was in her 50s. 'She said that when she got a bonus she headed straight out to buy a leather jacket from Gucci. She looks after it, hangs it carefully and treats the leather. She said she thinks of her skin the same way. It's so different now, the way women look at skin care.' Victor says women now are much more informed about skin care choices. What other products are there? In a few months, he has something tentatively called the acne dot coming to Hong Kong. It's a small circle filled with the same ingredients he would normally inject into his dermatology clients' large, angry pimples (cortisone, for example). Overnight, he says, the offending zit will flatten and lose any redness, without drying the skin surrounding it. Victor is still thinking about what to name it, but keep an eye out for it if you suffer from sporadic bursts of acne. He has five products on the shelves, with new ones arriving every three months. The Daily Anti-Ageing Facial Cleanser (HK$520/50ml) cleans and gently exfoliates (it has a non-grainy texture) by using non-chemical alpha-hydroxy acids and retinoid-free, marine-derived defoliator to calm the skin. The Bio-Nutritive Luxury Cream (HK$3,200/50ml) is the costliest, containing emollient-rich ingredients to 'reverse the signs of ageing at a cellular level'. Where can I get it? Lane Crawford IFC Mall and Pacific Place.
