CLP has set up a website to give students a better idea of sustainable development
China Light Power (CLP) launched a website last month to help students learn more about the latest developments in renewable energy.
Comprising environmental issues and comparisons of renewable energy applications in Hong Kong and overseas, the site (http://www.clpgroup.com/RE/) provides a rich source of environmental information for students.
The applications of three types of renewable energy - wind, biomass and hydropower - are explained in detail.
Interactive animation games are also included to illustrate how different countries use renewable energy.
In the 'wind' section, an animation shows how energy is generated by onshore and offshore wind turbines.
With buttons to adjust wind speed and other factors, the animation allows users to see how altitude, wind velocity and direction affect the amount of energy generated.
In the 'hydro energy' section, students learn about the Greek origin of the technology.
More than 2000 years ago, the Greeks used falling water to power wheels to grind wheat. Having discovered the enormous amount of energy falling water can generate, more and more factories in the US and Europe are installing water wheels to power saws and lumber mills.
With more agricultural land set aside for planting biofuel crops, biomass as a renewable form of energy has been pursued by scientists as an alternative to carbon and oil in recent years.
The website explains how plants collect energy from the sun through the process of photosynthesis and why the burning of plants can release it.
CLP hopes the website can raise the awareness of sustainable energy use among students.
'Students should be aware of the grave environmental crises the Earth faces. To help save
our planet, they should adopt green practices, such as switching off lights after they leave a room,' said Chan Ka-keung, managing director of CLP (Renewables).
Mr Chan also believed the new website can help enhance students' scientific knowledge.
'The issue of renewable energy use covers different disciplines, such as science and geography. A grasp of how different forms of renewable energy work will certainly stand students in good stead,' said Mr Chan.
