His natural, dynamic stage presence and versatile voice make him one of the most riveting live performers in the Canto-pop scene. And Eason Chan Yik-shun is now staging a new set of concerts at the Hong Kong Coliseum after his successful Get a Life gigs at the Hung Hom venue last year.

The 15 live shows, titled Moving On Stage 1, started last night and tickets for the first 12 gigs were snapped up in three hours. Three more shows were added to meet the overwhelming demand, and profits from two extra performances will go towards funding the 2009 East Asian Games to be hosted by Hong Kong.

The 33-year-old (above), who remains one of Hong Kong's best-selling singers and is seen as the successor to Canto-pop king Jacky Cheung Hok-yau, will be playing his hits as well as songs from his recently released double-disc album, Listen to Eason Chan, during the concerts. Produced by songwriter C.Y. Kong and former LMF member Davy Chan, the new record combines Chan's vocals over pulsating beats, making it perhaps the most ambitious Canto-pop dance music album in recent years.

But this was not a challenge for Chan, who has more than 40 records under his belt and has performed music from a wide range of genres from pop and ballads to jazz, swing, funk, electronica and rock.

Having been signed by Capital Artists after winning the TVB singing contest in 1995, Chan released his self-titled debut album the following year. Although the disc wasn't a best-seller, songs including Song of the Era and Hurt Letter received good radio play. His second album, With Me Often, caught the attention of fans and reviewers and his popularity and record sales have continued to soar.
