Occasionally, TVB manages to produce something that's good. At the Cable & Satellite Broadcasting Association of Asia (CASBAA) convention over the weekend, the station won the Asia-Pacific Child Rights Award for its Jade station doco Children Left Behind. Topping numerous other news programmes from around the region, the 30-minute report by producer Catherine Lee Yuk San chronicles the problem of children left home alone in rural mainland villages, especially in Hunan , Sichuan and Chongqing , when their parents move to cities in search of work.

The Asia-Pacific Child Rights Award was established in 2001 and is jointly organised by the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union, CASBAA and UN fund for children Unicef. The prize, judged by a panel of broadcasters, recognises top-quality programming related to children and outstanding news coverage of children's issues. The prize was presented last Friday at the convention's awards ceremony.

Congrats TVB. Now, if you can only do something about those embarrassing game shows and sexist beauty pageants.
