According to Simon Ho, dean, School of Business, and director, Centre for Corporate Governance and Financial Policy at the Hong Kong Baptist University, good corporate governance provides the cornerstone of Hong Kong's position as an international financial centre and the premier capital formation centre for the mainland.
Professor Ho also believes 'cornerstone', meaning solid foundation, underscores the importance of the inaugural Hong Kong Corporate Governance Excellence Awards.
The professor said the awards, jointly organised by The Chamber of Hong Kong Listed Companies (CHKLC) and the Centre for Corporate Governance and Financial Policy (CCGFP) of the university, highlighted the importance of the business and academic sectors working together to further raise corporate governance awareness.
'As a think-tank for corporate governance trends and issues, having the chance to collaborate with the chamber to institute such a unique award scheme is undoubtedly an invaluable experience.
'Bringing academics and business communities together to work for the benefit of both sides is always our mission,' Professor Ho said.
The CCGFP has also collaborated closely with CHKLC in launching a large-scale survey on corporate governance practices and perceptions of Hong Kong listed companies and the Hong Kong Corporate Governance Charter.
