Environmentally-conscious young horticulturists are promoting organic farming by growing mushrooms in a glasshouse at school.

Under vice-principal Tsang Kam-ho's guidance, students at Caritas Tuen Mun Marden Foundation Secondary School (CTMMFSS) take turns tending the fungi.

The scheme was initiated to promote organic farming.

Ever since opening last October, the glasshouse has been manned by a team of budding horticulturists. A small corner has also been set aside for herbs like rosemary, thyme and mint.

A horticulture enthusiast himself, Mr Tsang said the venture gave the students a sense of responsibility.

'Students learn a lot through growing plants. Because they know that the produce would be for sale, they have put more effort into cultivation.'

To create an ideal environment for the mushrooms to grow, the school built a glasshouse.
