Hong Kong has 47 registered newspapers. In the face of fierce competition from online news sources, some local newspapers have rolled out free online versions with unrestricted access to their archives. Over the past decade, the launch of four main free newspapers has brought big changes to the media landscape. Currently their combined daily circulation figure is more than 1.4 million. That their advertising volume accounts for more than half the total volume of the whole industry shows how much the media has changed.
