Taiwanese star Richie Jen Hsien-chi has been a common sight on the silver screen in recent years, but he's making a return to his roots as a singer with two concerts at the Hong Kong Coliseum early next week.

Part of the profits from next week's shows - his first solos in Hong Kong - will be donated to Yan Chai Hospital.

Jen was a singer and guitarist with a rock band while he was at university studying physical education, and also worked as a campus disc jockey. He was signed as a solo singer by a Taiwanese label during his last year on campus in 1990 and released his debut record, Ask One More Time, later that year.

However, his singing career didn't really take off until he joined Taiwan's Rock Records - the biggest record company on the island in 1996. Thanks to renowned composer and award-winning producer Johnny Chen, Jen recorded a number of melancholy and catchy love songs, such as Badly Hurt, and Soft Heart, which were well received by the Chinese-speaking music world.

His best-known album - Soft Heart - released in 1996, has sold more than 2 million copies in Asia.
