Fei Fei's little girl learns to stand on her own two feet
The late Fei Fei's little girl, Joyce Cheng Yan-yee, now has to stand on her own two feet, and that means fending for herself against nasty tabloids, especially since she is intent on pursuing an entertainment career as well. Recently, the daughter of Lydia Sum Tin-ha (also known as Lydia Shum) had to deny rumours that she had already blown most of her inheritance on her boyfriend and had to let go her mum's long-time helper and driver. 'Not true!' Cheng shot back at a recent China tourism event. The budding singer instead suggested she deliberately cut expenses to be more financially independent.
That's also why Cheng apparently rejected a record contract with Sony BMG. It seemed they offered a seven-year deal but, after consulting close family and lawyers, Cheng rejected it because she didn't think such a long deal was wise. 'I am 21 now and when the contract expires, I will be 28. Ai yah, that means I will have given all my youth to this contract.'
The other contentious issue surrounding Cheng is whether her career will be guided by star manager Florence Chan Suk-fan or her vocal teacher, Liu Chia-chang. Both were close friends of her mother and it seems both are jockeying for the position. Chan was quoted saying she would keep an eye on finding Cheng a good label 'home' and a helpful and caring manager. Until that right person was found, Chan said she would step up and take the role herself. Liu, meanwhile, maintains he will always be her singing teacher, no matter what. 'There is no need to have a contract between a teacher and a student, just as you wouldn't have a contract between a father and his daughter.'
