Filmmakers in conflict over movies on Bruce Lee's teacher
Could a battle be slowly brewing between Wong Kar-wai (right) and Mandarin Films producer Raymond Wong Pak-ming? It seems the two are in a bit of conflict with regard to competing film productions about Bruce Lee's martial-arts teacher, Ip Man. For years now, Wong Kar-wai has been talking about his desire to make a movie on the Wing Chun master with Tony Leung Chiu-wai starring as Ip. Of course, being the enigmatic director that he is, it has been all talk and no action. But in the meantime, Mandarin Films has gone out and started shooting a story of the martial-arts legend with Donnie Yen Ji-dan and Wilson Yip Wai-shun (Flash Point) directing. The problem is, Mandarin Films was using the exact name that Wong Kar-wai planned for his movie, Grandmaster Ip Man. After Raymond Wong announced his movie's title, the Blueberry Nights director, through his company Jet Tone, issued a statement suggesting it had the exclusive right to that name and it was 'shameful' of the other production to use it. Fuelling the fire, Ip Man's son, Ip Chun, then reportedly chimed in, saying Yen was better for the role because he knew kung fu. Who knows whether Mandarin Films caved in or decided to offer an olive branch in the feud, but now the title of its production has been changed to simply Ip Man. If all this was in an actual
kung fu movie
though, you know it would only be resolved with a showdown at dusk somewhere.
