Visitors to the Hong Kong Wetland Park's 2008 Year of the Frog Thematic Exhibition this month will be greeted by the exhibition's mascot, a giant green origami frog on loan from the Hong Kong Origami Society.
The giant frog will compete for a prize in an international origami contest in Japan later this month.
As part of the Wetland Park's drive to improve public awareness of the imperilled status of the world's frog population, the Society has also provided an origami lifecycle of the frog, from tadpole to fully grown adult, and is holding free frog origami workshops on weekends.
Wendy Chan Li Po-shan, senior supervisor with the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department, said the 'Wonderland of Frog' origami workshops have been very popular with visitors to the exhibition.
'We wanted to make the exhibition more interactive, and many youths have signed up for the free workshops,' said Mrs Chan.
'Making tadpoles, jumping frogs or sitting frogs all require different skills,' said Kwan Chak-lau, chairman of the Hong Kong Origami Society. 'The magic of origami is the diversity of shapes and sizes that can grow out of a single sheet of paper.'
