Love-starved characters in hip outfits flit around London in light rom-com Love and Other Disasters. But the love woes afflicting the main characters are so contrived the audience is unlikely to care.

The main character Jacks (Brittany Murphy) spends time with men she's not attracted to so she can avoid heartbreak.

Her best friend Peter (Matthew Rhys) spends so much time fantasising, he can't fall in love with a real person.

Sharing the pair's bad luck in love is a potty poetess (Catherine Tate) who becomes smitten with a phone company caller. But instead of endearing them to the audience, the characters' eccentricities are tiring.

The film is also filled with obvious references to other movies like Breakfast at Tiffany's and The Devil Wears Prada.

The film feels more like a jumble of old ideas than an innovative attempt at the well-trodden rom-com genre.
