Why do the Welsh sing so well? The Hong Kong Welsh Male Voice Choir does not consist entirely of Welshmen, but the majority are. This year they celebrate their 30th anniversary and have been invited to sing at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

The choir, whose 40 choristers will join some 15 other male voice choirs from around the world, is working on its performance for the 21st Festival of Male Choirs, also known as the 1,000 Voices Concert, on October 18.

'To be able to sing in ... the Royal Albert Hall and the House of Lords is the dream of many choristers,' said chairman Simon Clennell, who said some members sang at the Hyde Park venue in 2004. 'Only a few overseas choirs take part each time, so ... to be invited back four years later is something special.'

Joining the Hongkongers will be the Aberhonddu and District Male Choir, Cor Meibion Onllwyn and the Treorchy Male Choir, as well as Prvo Slovensko Pevsko Drstvo Lira - not a Welsh miner among them; they're from Slovenia.
