Five others have been discharged in stable condition, while three did not require hospital treatment. The two in hospital are an eight-year-old boy admitted to Princess Margaret Hospital last Wednesday and a 22-month-old boy admitted to the same hospital on Friday.

The 10 children were diagnosed with kidney stones under the citywide free assessment of children under 12 who had consumed melamine-tainted milk or milk products. Some 42,292 children had been tested under the government programme, which could last at least five more months.

The affected children were two girls and eight boys, aged from 22 months to 10 years old. They were found to have kidney stones measuring between 1.4mm and 5mm in diameter, officials said yesterday.

Seven were said to be 'suspected' cases while three were 'probable' cases, according to criteria worked out by the Centre for Health Protection. But 'confirmed' cases still need to be defined.

The government's criteria for defining cases of renal disease caused by melamine had been sent to the World Health Organisation and accepted by the international agency, officials said. In one of the three 'probable' cases, the patient was found to have taken in four times the tolerable daily threshold.
