Perfect vision no obstacle to wearing fancy frames, say celebrities
A new eyewear boutique called Eyedonist opened in Times Square on Tuesday with the usual celebrity and society fanfare. Since it's a fancy-designer-frames store, you might assume those attending would have been faces who actually wear glasses in public. Nope!
They're like vegetarians at a burger joint: we've never seen any of the four personalities - model Kathy Chow Man-kei, former television reporter Sharon Cheung Po-wah, socialite Cissy Wang and TV host Fiona Yuen Choi-wan (pictured, left to right) - try the four-eyes look. Ironically, the only two who actually donned a pair for the event are also the two who claim perfect eyesight.
Chow told us she had almost 20/20 vision but owned about 20 pairs of spectacles (and another 50 pairs of shades) for non-makeup days. Yuen also maintains some frames for fashion accessories. 'I love wearing glasses,' she gushed. 'I think it really gives you a whole new look. And I remember when I played a doctor, the producer asked me to wear glasses to look more professional and sophisticated.'
As for former Cable News anchor Cheung, at least she had a professional reason for turning to contacts. 'Wearing glasses doesn't look good on camera and sometimes it makes reflections, so I was told not to wear them reading the news.' However, looking smart and being smart are two different things, as actor Donnie Yen Ji-dan's wife Wang demonstrated in her explanation of wearing both contact lenses and specs. 'I am so used to wearing lenses, I literally feel nothing at all. But I also wear non-prescription glasses [on top] for fashion reasons.'
