More than 60 secondary schools will participate in a carnival highlighting climate change and other environmental crises today at the University of Hong Kong.

The biennial Hong Kong Geography Day is co-organised by the university's geography department and the Geographical Association.

Featuring talks, exhibitions and booths set up by environmental and government organisations, the theme of this year's event is climate change and geographical education.

Director of the Hong Kong Observatory, Lam Chiu-ying, will present a talk. Presentations and discussions will also be held by faculty members and postgraduate students on the department's courses and facilities.

Maggi Leung Wai-han, the department's assistant professor, said they wanted to encourage more students to reflect on climate issues facing the Earth.

'The level of awareness on geography issues has been rising among local students,' she said. 'However, there are still many climate issues, like sustainable development, worthy of more in-depth analysis by them. By letting them understand more about our department, we hope more students will consider choosing our programme for their university study in future.'
