Practical but stylish furnishings transform a compact Mid-Levels apartment from poky to perfect.

Perspective is everything - 'small' can either be cramped or cute. While waiting for their Pok Fu Lam home to be renovated, Nathalie Edwards and her husband ransformed a 640 sq ft Mid-Levels apartment into a cosy cocoon.

'What I wanted to do was breathe life into the space,' says Edwards, who runs her own interior design company, Life Styling.

The apartment had been renovated by its previous owners, from three bedrooms to one, so Edwards focused on the apartment's interior. The two problems were insufficient storage space and light.

Edwards' solution to the storage issue was to find or create nooks and crannies that could be concealed. Places that are often overlooked, such as the base of the kitchen countertop, were fitted with unobtrusive shallow cupboards. In the bathroom, a long, low rectangular shelf unit has been installed without making the room appear crowded. The ottoman in the living room lifts up to provide a sizeable cube of storage space and in the bedroom, the entire bed can be hoisted up to reveal a six-foot wide area for bulky items.

To maximise the natural light, sheer, full-length curtains were chosen for the living room and bedroom. The living room window faces a wall and Edwards says the red brick adds warmth and depth to the area. 'We find it a very attractive wall,' says Edwards, who contends it lends the home an air of peacefulness.
