It is a common sight in Hong Kong. People weaving downwards into bustling MTR stations, headphones on as they listen to their favourite tunes, confident in the knowledge that a super-efficient transport system will deliver them to their destinations on time.

The rail network, which spans the city and is still growing, has ensured expedient travel for residents who need to get from door to door in the fastest time. It is the envy of many world-class cities and its importance is reflected in residential property prices that often hinge on their proximity to the MTR.

This continuous growth, strongly supported by the government, has resulted in a demand for professionals. Aedas, a leader in rail station design, is on the lookout for those who have what it takes to leave their mark on one of the world's best transport networks.

With a team of about 60 people spread over six MTR projects, the company is not resting on its laurels and is actively making sure that its talent base is growing. 'We are training the next generation to take on all the new work,' said Max Connop, director of Aedas.

Rail and infrastructure have been a cornerstone of the company since it completed the MTR project at Siu Ho Wan in 1997. Aedas has designed more than 25 stations for the MTR Corporation and has substantial projects in Dubai, India and Singapore. 'We are actively gearing up for a substantial growth in rail team numbers and are very proud that the majority of our rail teams were born and educated in Hong Kong,' Mr Connop said.

While there is always opportunity for imported talent, employing local rail architects has definite advantages. Mr Connop said they tended to have a natural instinct for projects because they knew the locale, the connection routes and the heritage of the different areas. 'That is a wonderful asset. They have strong ownership because they are Hong Kong born and bred, so there is immense pride.'
