Eco-designers invited to win prizes in exciting new competition

Turn your household garbage into cash! That's what retail developer Sino Group is offering in a new local competition. The Greenovation Challenge is part of its effort to cultivate a more socially conscious corporate image. Members of the public are encouraged to convert old, discarded or obsolete goods into innovative home items. An example is this toy vehicle (pictured) made by a student at the Ju Ching Chu Secondary School's science week last autumn.

There are four categories for students, individuals and families. The grand prize in each group is HK$3,000, a trophy and a one-page feature in the Metropop Magazine. There are also consolation cash awards, too. There is even a most-popular prize that will be decided by internet voting. Winning entries will also be displayed in Sino Group malls in July.

To give the public some inspiration, a series of workshops has been organised at Kowloon Tong's InnoCentre with a Hong Kong Polytechnic design professor and local artists. The first two such hands-on seminars are on March 14 and 21. The nominal HK$100 fee will be donated to the non-profit organisation, the Hong Kong Ambassadors of Design. The deadline is April 20.
