What is it? A cosmetics brand from Sydney that has created a buzz in Hong Kong and elsewhere.

How did it get started? Hanlon launched an open-air stall at Sydney's Paddington Market in 2002. After three months, the company says, sales skyrocketed as word of mouth spread of his skincare concoctions.

Marina Albert, media itinerary co-ordinator for Tourism New South Wales, filmed the crowds swarming and her clip made it onto Hong Kong television. The story goes that a fashion magazine editor hunted Hanlon down to get her hands on his wares. In 2006, Hanlon opened a store in upmarket shopping mall The Strand. The brand's devotees are said to include Nicole Kidman, Madonna and Kylie Minogue.

What's so good about it? Hanlon says his creams are based on original 16th-century herbalist formulas and made using a process called electromagnetique fermentation (it takes three to nine months to make a small batch). The technique is said to give 'an appearance of trans-dermal absorption'. They contain no mineral oil, no petroleum, no beeswax and no artificial preservatives. They're made by hand and packaged in litho-printed calligraphic labels and boxes.

What about the products? The aloe vera and cucumber face and body moisturiser (below left, HK$369/190ml) was created to smooth and repair sensitive and upset skin. It contains botanical stress busters ginseng and cucumber to calm skin quickly and it helps to reduce redness and inflammation with fire-fighting allatonin (perfect as an after-sun treatment). It also contains marshmallow and chamomile enriched in a natural base of freshly harvested aloe vera. The cream is fortified with vitamins E and C and it can be used by men and women. Hanlon also offers anti-ageing serums, hand creams, cleansers, hair care products and printed fabrics.
