I know, I know. There are not that many good reasons to trek over to West Kowloon. However, you might make an exception tomorrow night.

Songwriter and singer Hanjin Tan will officially release his CD crack at jazz standards with a free outdoor concert at the Civic Square, on top of Elements mall, on Saturday at 6pm.

The Singapore native, who has worked with various Canto stars, including Joey Yung Cho-yee and Jacky Cheung Hok-yau, is now dabbling in jazz. Tan will be scatting and bopping along to numbers such as Cheek To Cheek, Skylark, Honeysuckle Rose and Sweet Lorraine, featured on his Raw Jazz CD.

Admittedly, the name is a bit misleading since it conjures images of John Coltrane blasting atonal improvisation for hours on end, when in fact Tan is more a bubbly, crowd-friendly song stylist.

Joining him will be pianist Jason Cheng, Paul Candelaria on bass and Skip Moy on guitar. You can't get much better entertainment on a Saturday night, especially since it's free.

And if you dig him, grab a copy of the disc at the mall's HMV store.
