Insurance industry sources said critical illness insurance will not cover medical costs claimed in relation to swine flu.
Elaine Chan Sau-ho, vice-president of group and credit insurance in AIA's health services department, said critical illness insurance generally only covered illnesses like cancer or heart disease.
'So far I haven't seen any critical illness insurance policy state it will cover swine flu, or Sars,' she said.
General medical insurance usually contained more exclusions than life insurance, so applicants should check policy details because infectious diseases might be excluded.
Insurance sector lawmaker Chan Kin-por agreed that critical illness insurance usually covered illnesses that required long-term treatments. Swine flu did not appear to fall into that category and was not covered.
Mr Chan said general medical insurance covered hospital fees irrespective of the reason people were admitted, so those with that kind of insurance had no reason to worry.
