Identifying target jobs is only the beginning of a search. You need a 'killer' reumeand cover letter to stand out from the competition and secure a job interview.

Employers receive hundreds of applications for their vacancies and it is in your best interest to make their job easier by showing how your skills and background make you the ideal candidate for the position.

Your cover letter and r?sum? are the initial point of contact with the employer and first impressions count. Keep the format simple so it is easy to read and, most importantly, tailor the application for the vacancy for which you are applying.

A reume typically includes a summary of your personal details, education, professional experience and qualifications, and personal achievements. It should be no more than two to three pages and, for a fresh graduate, one page will usually suffice.

Those with paid or unpaid experience should list their period of employment, the name of the employer, position with the company and what the role entailed. But do not just write out your job duties. Expand on them and elaborate on the key skills you learned.

If you have no work experience, you can still show responsibility and transferable workplace skills gained at university as long as you can establish relevance. For example, you can highlight selected studies which you performed well in - a high achieving student won't go unmerited with prospective employers.
