A university test has recorded marked improvement in pupils' performance in mathematics and problem-solving skills.

Some 2,000 pupils from 134 primary and 74 secondary schools took part in the World Class Tests conducted by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in April. The test has two components: mathematics and problem-solving. Candidates were divided into two age groups - eight to 11, and 12 to 14.

Fifty-three per cent of the younger age group got distinctions in mathematics, compared to 38 per cent last year. For the older age group, 42 per cent scored distinctions, compared to 39 per cent last year.

In problem-solving, 51 per cent of the younger group scored distinctions, an increase of 16 percentage points on last year's figure. In the older group, 33 per cent scored distinctions, up five points.

University mathematics professor Chiang Yik-man said there was a marked improvement in all parts of mathematics except algebra.

'Compared to last year, their performance in measurements, numbers, data handling is better. While the number of students who scored distinctions has increased, the number of students who got the 'ungraded' rank also decreased.'
