There was a mix of emotions at elite primary schools around the city yesterday as anxious parents found out whether their children had been accepted at their preferred school, in the first round of Primary One allocations.

At La Salle Primary School, some who found their children's names were included on a list of 90 successful applicants posted on the bulletin board literally jumped with joy.

A Mrs Chan was among the happy parents. Her younger son was one of 36 pupils to secure a place set aside for children who have a sibling at the school or a parent working there.

'My elder son is studying there,' she said. 'I am happy that they both got accepted.'

She said she spent between HK$5,000 and HK$6,000 a month on her younger son to boost his chances of entering the school, including sending him to art, piano and swimming classes.

The efforts of a Mr Chiang, however, did not pay off.
