For local designer Jennifer Chan Wai-yee, there's nothing cuter than a mother and child in matching gear. That's the idea behind her new line, Jenn Yee Petite, which was launched on Saturday at an event doubling as the opening of her new workshop/retail studio on the fourth floor of 17 Lan Fong Road, Causeway Bay.
'Maybe not exactly the same as the mother but either same material or always a similarity in the style,' Chan (pictured) said of the thinking behind her children's line complementing her womenswear. 'My cousin has a baby about a year old now. At first, I wanted to make clothes for her just for fun. They turned out cute so it was a spontaneous idea to do matching concepts with the mum.'
That kind of spur-of-the-moment inspiration is also what took Chan from a white-collar career to the world of fashion. 'I used to study finance and worked in audit for a period. But I really wanted to pursue this passion.' After graduating from the London College of Fashion, she launched the Jenn Yee Workshop three years ago.
Don't expect Chan's matching women's and children's clothes to be tacky and frilly. In fact, her inspirations are quite formal. 'My style is quite feminine but I don't like to go to extremes.' Her workshop is open daily from noon to 8pm.
