Jewellery designer Matthew Campbell Laurenza splits his time between New York and Hong Kong, but he's put down his retail roots here. The first MCL shop opened on Thursday in the Landmark with a bunch of friends in the house, including actress Belinda Hamnett, who dressed her d?colletage with Laurenza's autograph instead of a necklace.
'The concept of this store is very green,' Laurenza said. 'Most of the exteriors you see here are made with fibreglass, which can break apart and can be moved around if we are to expand the store. The materials are recyclable too.'
However, the theme of the night was another colour: purple. His logo is in the shade and so were the vodka champagne cocktails. 'It is a colour of royalty,' he said. Clearly Laurenza has princely plans. He's already looking at a possible second location on Canton Road, Tsim Sha Tsui. Plus he's expanding beyond jewellery. 'I'm going to come out with a handbag collection next. It will be after the Oscars. Look for me on the red carpet.'
