Socialite, fashion icon and solicitor Kai-bong Chau died yesterday of intestinal cancer at the age of 75. 
But he had no regrets as he was granted his final wish - seeing his grandson. 
Chau's son, Brandon Chau Kwok-fung,  said his father died between 1pm and 2pm yesterday at the Hong Kong Sanatorium and Hospital in Happy Valley. 
He was diagnosed with cancer in March 2008 and the doctor gave him six months to live. He did well as he went on to live for nearly two years, Brandon Chau said.  'Before he was hospitalised, he always told me that he wanted to see the birth of my son.'  
Brandon's son was scheduled to be born on the fourth day of the first month in the Lunar calendar - February 17 - but his birth was brought forward to  last Saturday. 
Chau's widow, Brenda, told Cable TV yesterday that Brandon brought their newborn baby to his father two days ago. 'They told him: 'Open your eyes, open your eyes, your little grandson's here', and his eyes opened up. He nodded and said 'hm',  and went back to sleep,' she said.
Brandon Chau, who is a barrister, said the family had known about his illness for some time and were prepared for his death. 
 'But at least his final wish [of seeing his grandson] came true and he passed away peacefully,' he said, adding that his father was not in pain when he passed away.
He said his father's condition improved at times but also deteriorated during treatment.  The doctor did not say at which stage the cancer was when diagnosed, but said at the time that it was curable. 
Brandon Chau went to the Hong Kong Funeral Home yesterday afternoon to make arrangements for the funeral, which he said would be held after the Lunar New Year.  
Kai-bong Chau and his wife, Brenda, are famed  for their  three Rolls-Royces - a pink Silver Cloud, a gold Phantom 6 and a beige Silver Shadow. 
The couple wore  identical outfits at  social gatherings and fashion shows, making them one of the city's best known couples.  
'Our style is unique. We choose different materials and get the outfits custom-made in Hong Kong. Two couturiers, Maxi and Guna, make Brenda's clothes,' Chau said in 2004.
Former radio agony aunt Pamela Pak Wan-kam, who has known the couple for nearly three decades, said Chau had an enormous ego and did not care about being ridiculed. 'He and his wife just lived the way that made them happy,'  Pak said. 
Chau was the son of  Sir Sik-nin Chau, a renowned  eye specialist and prominent political figure from the 1940s to the 1960s. Sik-nin was an executive councillor and legislator in the 1950s. 
His mother was one of the early founders of the  Po Leung Kuk charity. Kai-bong Chau graduated from Cambridge with a law degree and became a solicitor. He opened a law firm, K. B. Chau & Co,  in Hong Kong in 1964. 
He transferred the business of his law firm to other lawyers in 1990. 
He was included in the 15th edition of Who's Who in America, which was published in 1998.
Andrew Cheng Kar-foo, lawmaker and an incumbent partner of K.B. Chau & Co, said Kai-bong always behaved in the manner of an English gentleman. 'He opened the car door for people, regardless of whether they were men or women, and let them go first,' said Cheng, who handled some legal matters commissioned by Chau in recent years.
