Kung Fan-hung dies after collapsing at show
Opera star Kung Fan-hung died in hospital after collapsing at the Hong Kong Coliseum last night as her foster child, Connie Chan Po-chu, was staging a Cantonese opera show. Kung (pictured) was 98.
With family members trying to shield her from a media scrum, Kung was on her way to rest backstage when she collapsed.
She was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, where she was declared dead at 8.21pm.
Chan's show went on.
Kung served as actress and producer with her husband, actor and director Chan Fei-lung, in a film company they formed. The couple adopted Chan, the legendary 1950s child star, a few months after she was born to a poor family in Xinhui, Guangdong, in 1946.
Chan went to the hospital with her son after 11pm when she finished her performance.
