Nurse, 35, dies from virus that causes hand, foot and mouth disease
A nurse from United Christian Hospital has died of an infection of a highly contagious intestinal virus that she might have caught from her daughters.
The 35-year-old nurse, who worked in the hospital's paediatric department, reported a hand rash on May 12, and developed fever and dizziness on Friday. She was found collapsed and was admitted to Queen Elizabeth Hospital the next day.
She died on Sunday. The hospital has referred her case to the coroner.
The Centre for Health Protection said her throat and rectal swabs tested positive for enterovirus, a virus that could lead to hand, foot and mouth disease.
The results of further tests were pending.
The nurse's two daughters, aged 17 months and four years old, showed symptoms of hand, foot and mouth disease earlier this month, the centre said.
They sought medical treatment and were now asymptomatic.
