Cheating cases in the HKCEE fell but the number of infringements involving the use of mobile phones rose significantly, the exam authority says. There were just two cases of cheating this year, compared with 11 last year.
The authority's general manager for school examinations and assessment, Magaret Hui Yuen-ching, said two students were penalised with invalidated marks for one of their subjects. 'Both cases did not involve hi-tech equipment,' she said. 'One of the students stole a peek at the paper of the candidate sitting nearby and was caught by the invigilator. Although the number of cheating cases has decreased, there was a 25 per cent rise in cases involving infringement of mobile phone rules.'
A total of 209 students were penalised for mobile phone transgressions, compared with 167 last year.
There was a more than 30 per cent increase in the number of candidates who failed to comply with rules about exam times, with 179 students infringing time rules, compared with 138 last year.
'Some of them looked at the questions before exams commenced, while the others continued writing even though invigilators had announced time was up.'
Of the 209 students, 11 students had their marks invalidated, 36 had their grades downgraded, and 162 had marks deducted.
