34,000 left to fight for Form Six places

More than 34,000 pupils will race around the city today fighting for the remaining Form Six places at public schools. Each place will be contested by more than nine pupils.

A total of 56,451 pupils, or 71 per cent of day school pupils, have obtained the minimum qualifications for Form Six.

The minimum entrance requirements for Form Six are six marks out of 30 over six subjects, including Chinese and English, with a pass carrying one mark.

A total of 26,150 Form Six places were on offer at government and aided schools. After yesterday's scramble, only 3,589 subsidised Form Six places were left. Some 22,561 places were snapped up yesterday by pupils who scored a minimum of 14 marks out of 30.

That means 34,735 pupils who fulfilled the minimum entrance requirements will scurry around the city today in an effort to secure one of the remaining places. With 323 places on offer, Sha Tin is the district with the most places, followed by Tai Po with 298.

A total of 3,520 Form Six places were on offer at direct subsidy scheme schools. After yesterday, only 430 are left for today's seekers.

All the Form Six places at the two renowned colleges that offer matriculation classes - Po Leung Kuk Vicwood K.T. Chong Sixth Form College and Hang Seng School of Commerce - were filled up by the afternoon yesterday.
