Fare Chiu Chow.
Ambience A neighbourhood takeaway shop specialising in traditional Chiu Chow fare with the lo shui (soya-sauce marinated) geese prepared for the day hanging in the display window. The small outfit has standing room for three staff and one to two customers placing orders - others must form a queue outside.
Cost HK$73 per catty for the lo shui goose and feet, HK$103 per catty for lo shui goose wings.
Who to bring Anyone willing to traipse to Sai Wan Ho on your behalf who is trustworthy enough to return with your goose intact.
Turn-ons Its signature poached lo shui goose with garlic, chilli and vinegar dipping sauce is a must try. Made using fresh ingredients with a secret traditional Chiu Chow recipe, the flavoursome goose is tender and juicy. The queues have not let up since the restaurant was opened in 2002, as some patrons come from as far as Cheung Chau and others bringing their takeaway to faraway places such as Singapore, Indonesia and Canada. Other popular items include the lo shui goose feet and wings. There are no plans to expand beyond its one shop in Hong Kong as the shop's owners want to maintain standards.
Turn-offs Joining the long queue and not knowing whether there will be anything left by the time you get to the counter. Due to the limited quantity of geese sold each day, it's best to get there early for first pick of what's available and to avoid the crowds. Be there by 7pm at the latest to avoid disappointment.
