As the overall winner of the HKMA Best Annual Reports Awards 2010, the Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing (HKEx) believes its report must put into words transparency and accountability.
Joseph Mau, HKEx company secretary, says as the exchange controller, HKEx's annual report is not only viewed by its shareholders but a wide variety of readers, including listed companies, financial services professionals, government officials, regulators, journalists, scholars, lawyers and accountants, locally and globally.
'The annual report is the 'vehicle' that carries the company's information to our stakeholders. Although it is also an important icon of the company, we do not aim to produce a fancy sports car but one with balanced appearance and performance,' Mau says.
Entrusted with shareholders' money to run the business, the HKEx is obliged to be transparent about business operations and be accountable for decisions.
'As a responsible corporate citizen, we are also accountable to a much bigger group of stakeholders including our employees, customers, suppliers and the public, who are not only interested in our financial data but also other non-financial corporate information,' Mau says.
The theme of the winning report is 'dependable, determined and diligent' which are the characteristics of an ox and qualities the HKEx embraces to advance Hong Kong's sustainable financial development.
