An MTR train driver has been suspended after he mistakenly opened all the doors before an East Rail Line train had fully pulled into a station platform yesterday.
The incident happened when the Lok Ma Chau-bound train stopped at University station at 12.17pm and the driver opened the doors before the last compartment had reached the platform.
An MTR Corporation spokesman said the driver realised the 'irregularity' and immediately closed the doors. He then informed the operations control centre and obtained authorisation to move the train forward to the correct stopping position before reopening the doors to let passengers board and alight.
The operations control centre arranged for the train to be taken out of service and returned to the depot for inspection.
Investigations showed the occurrence was caused by human error, the spokesman said. In a normal situation, if a train does not stop at the proper stopping position, the train doors cannot be opened. The spokesman said the driver had admitted he did not follow the proper procedure and had activated an 'override switch' without authorisation from operations control, so all the doors opened.
The spokesman had no details of how many passengers were in the last carriage, but said no one was injured in the incident.
