University teachers who are considered an inspiration to their students have the chance to win an award worth HK$500,000 under a scheme  that will be launched in September.
The University Grants Committee Teaching Award will be open to the eight publicly funded universities,  which will put forward two nominees each  year. 
From the 16 candidates, three will be selected for the award, which comes with a cash prize of HK$25,000 and HK$475,000 in grants for research on teaching or design programmes, such as workshops.
Shortlisted candidates will be assessed on their curriculum design, results of  research they have carried out and  academic achievements. 
A selection committee made up of local and overseas scholars and non-academic professionals will screen the candidates, who will be asked to submit a proposal  detailing how they  would use the  grants. 
UGC chairwoman Laura Cha Shih May-lung said the value of the award was high compared to overseas equivalents. 'Other countries usually give out US$30,000,'  she said.
She said the award was launched in response to complaints that universities  placed too much emphasis on research, rather than teaching. 
'Such a problem can be found all over the world. Much of the emphasis on rankings takes into account scientific research. We want to do something positive [to boost teaching quality],' Cha said.
Edmond Ko Inq-ming, convenor of a sub-group established under the committee to develop the assessment criteria of the award, said the concepts of teaching had to be changed.
'Many teachers think that teaching well means completing the syllabuses, being able to handle classroom management and finishing marking all the papers ... a good teacher is one who cares about the students' growth,' he said.



Inspirational university teachers to vie for HK$500,000 award
