Daniel Malan is an assistant professor of business ethics at Trinity College Dublin. He is co-chair of the B20 task force on Integrity and Compliance, and a member of the World Economic Forum’s Global Future Council on Transparency and Anti-Corruption.

Efforts to curb tobacco have been thwarted in part because half the global cigarette industry is controlled by eight countries who are part of those efforts. Governments with a stake in the industry should acknowledge the conflict of interest and make a commitment to manage it.
