Unfortunately I don't see this ending well and rather than increasing democracy, I can see that the end effect can only be the opposite as they are directly challenging Beijing's rule (which let's be honest does actually own Hong Kong). My wife is Chinese and the (very simple) way that she sees it is that Hong Kong is part of China and that if these people don't like it, find someplace else to live and that Chinese people have had enough of what they see as the arrogance of Hong Kong people!

Hongkongers can say goodbye to Hong Kong's feats, they will kill HK's bright lights with their own hands. The old HK will become history, and the new murky future of the city is dawning. Sad, real sad. Too naive to be able to see it.

Hongkongers, good luck in your fight for your awesome city.
