
I refer to the report ("Student wins humanities place at Cambridge", February 21).
I deeply appreciate Herman Lam Ho-man's determination to follow an unconventional academic path of humanities, and his parents' respect for the youngster's interest and choice.
Such qualities eventually paid off as he was offered a humanities place at Cambridge University with a scholarship.
As a local secondary school student taking humanities subjects, I am also saddened by the trend that most Hong Kong parents tend to let their children take science subjects only.
I can remember how hard it was to convince my parents and teachers before they agreed with my decision to take humanities subjects, although they were clearly disappointed. One of the reasons for this attitude is the consideration of future prospects when choosing subjects, regardless of what interests students.
In her column ("Is HK education settling for less?" February 15), Regina Ip Lau Suk-yee said local students and parents think of the academic requirements for only the most secure and easily available jobs.
