Happy to be sad: how mental health means giving full play to all emotions
I am writing in response to the article, “How a little sadness is vital to make your children more happy” (March 26).
Emotions help us to survive. They are essential for regulating our mental health.
Some people classify emotions as either good or bad. In my view, all emotions are good, a conclusion I arrived at after watching the Pixar film Inside Out . Emotions help people express their feelings, including sadness. It is a normal human emotion, just as normal as joy or anger.
Parents should teach their children that it’s all right to be sad sometimes. Mental issues often result from an excess of bottled-up emotion. Parents should pay close attention to the mental health of their children and teach them how to express their emotions properly, especially when they feel under pressure.
