The trade war being waged by Donald Trump’s America against China is expected to result in a lose-lose situation, never mind the US president’s “America first” rhetoric about emerging as the winner in a short time (“China’s trade war response can hit US tech industry where it hurts”, July 12). The battle of tariffs and counter-tariffs could lead to higher unemployment and consumer prices in the US, hurting its economy along with those of others (“China-US trade war threats add up to lower growth” July 2).

The world, in fact, will feel the effects of the ridiculous audacity of Donald Trump. However, amid all the criticism of Trump, I will boldly say a few good words for him.

For all the senseless things he has done with the trade war, he is perhaps not as much of a rascal as many like to think. That is because he has moved to lift the ban on the export of crucial high-end chips to the Chinese company ZTE (“ZTE clears another hurdle with escrow agreement, ban still in place”, July 12).
