Your editorial of July 8, “Gay rights ruling will help Hong Kong”, reminded us all that we would enjoy a competitive edge over Singapore, the mainland and Japan in attracting overseas talent if we legalised same-sex marriage.
But these rivals might well have been so successful because they have not been indiscriminately copying the values of nouveau riche Western countries, but persevering with their own age-old Confucian meritocracy.
Returning to the QT/SS same-sex civil union and visa issue in Hong Kong, it is noted that the Court of Final Appeal has required the granting of “spousal visas” to such same-sex partners (“How same-sex spousal visa ruling will affect other cases in Hong Kong”, July 6).
How can it say that this would not affect Hong Kong marriage laws, where a spouse can only be of the opposite sex? Is it not setting a common law precedent which then becomes law, to override Hong Kong statutory marriage laws?
