I refer to your article, “Hong Kong star Andy Lau voices support for land reclamation in promotional video” (October 3)
Andy Lau Tak-wah has been a top star here for decades. Given that the entertainment industry is so competitive and Hong Kong so fast-moving, this is something to be reckoned with.

I like him personally. He appeals to me as a big brother – hardworking, sincere, sensible and loving. Throughout his 35-year career as a singer and movie star, he has also been like a friend who stands by me, facing the ups and downs in my life. I am sure many others share my feelings.

It’s good that he has taken a stance on land reclamation. What he said in the video testifies yet again to his great common sense and his love for us all. To be honest, nobody in their right mind can debate it.

I am therefore amazed to see many negative comments emerge in the last week. Fans who are pro-activists expressed disappointment that Lau is openly supporting the administration and big businesses. Some said he has betrayed the trust of his fans. Others said that as an entertainer, he should have stayed away from current affairs.
