How refreshing to read the letter from Dr Antoine Martin and Philippe Bonnet, which rightly identifies one of the reasons so many Britons voted to leave the European Union (“What Europe needs for deeper business ties with Asia”, October 28).

The EU is so bound by its own rules and regulations that it has lost its ability to react quickly to external changes and challenges. The plan to create a “Business Advisory Group for Euro-Asian Connectivity” sounds good, but experience shows that this is just another way of not making rapid decisions, protecting the status quo and keeping politicians’ jobs safe.

This limits the ability of individual countries to be flexible and realistic in their relationships with countries outside the EU, which is what Britain would like to do, despite our current, rather ineffectual, leadership.

The letter mentions the gap between the European focus on making rules and the Asian focus on building win-win business relationships. Well, there will be huge benefits if Britain can free itself from the EU’s shackles.
