I strongly disagree with the viewpoint of Ivy Fung (“Daily Hong Kong tax on mainland tourists is a good idea”, January 24), even though I totally understand her concerns regarding the huge number of mainland visitors arriving in the city every day, causing overcrowding in areas such as Tung Chung, Hung Hom, To Kwa Wan and Kowloon City and sparking complaints from local residents and office workers.

However, I do not think a daily Hong Kong tax on mainland tourists is the way forward, as the reasoning behind this is plain selfish and silly. Is Hong Kong going to tax all visitors in the near future? If not, how is it fair to tax tourists from the mainland when other visitors also contribute to the overcrowding issue in the city?

Instead, I would suggest that the Hong Kong government set a daily quota on the number of cross-border visitors, and have this strictly enforced and monitored. I believe this would be a much more feasible and reasonable solution.
