I am writing in response to the article, “Homeless by choice: Hongkonger tells of why he gave up middle-class life to sleep rough in Victoria Park” (January 26). To be honest, I think Hong Kong is one of the most depressing places in the world and I really admire Simon Lee for following his vision of the good life, even though it means sleeping on the streets.
In Hong Kong, people are always busy because of work, school or family commitments. We seldom think through what we really want but instead want to achieve what society considers as admirable and as markers of success. As a Form 4 student, the Diploma of Secondary Education exam is on my mind all the time, and most of my conversations revolve around how to get better marks or what to study at university. We are in too much of a hurry most of the time to really think about what our own dreams are.

I am not saying all of us should follow Lee’s path and just choose the lifestyle we think would make us happiest. It is understandable that many factors come into play as you get older and have your own family. It is also admirable to assume the responsibility of taking care of your family. However, Mr Lee’s story made me think that we should all give ourselves the chance to slow down and think about what we really want and what we can do to achieve it. Let’s live one step at a time, there is no need to rush through life.
