Frank Lee has nailed it with regards to Singapore (“Forget Singapore, Hong Kong is being left in the dust by mainland China cities”, February 18).
Hongkongers blame everything on China without looking in the mirror. Long working hours, a Dickensian education system and unpaid overtime have nothing to do with competitiveness, efficiency or creativity. The gap between the rich and poor is shocking, as is the high price of housing. The property and supermarket sectors are corrupt.
More than 20 years after the handover, where is the West Kowloon Cultural District? Hong Kong still remains a dull financial centre but where are our other areas of strength? Meanwhile, China is gaining a reputation for creativity, research and development, science and technology, just to name a few.
The Hong Kong government is so archaic, it’s amazing more Asian centres haven’t overtaken the city. Hong Kong could be fixed overnight with the right leadership. At the moment, Hong Kong is boring.
The fear was always not China taking over but the British leaving. It’s not a case of “God save the Queen”, but God save Hong Kong.
