LettersBernie Sanders will run again in 2020: this is why I’m all for it

  • The rest of the contenders in the Democratic presidential sweepstakes are but a pale reflection of Sanders
  • Go for the real thing, the genuine article, a political diviner

US Senator Bernie Sanders is a septuagenarian curmudgeon. So am I, and I speak curmudgeon fluently. I will analyse, as a selfless public service, just why the weathered and rumpled ranter of 2016 deserves another presidential run (“Bernie Sanders says he will run for president in 2020”, February 19).

Mr Sanders has done yeoman’s work at trench level for years, heavy-lifting an ageing Beltway behemoth called the Democratic Party into a newly energised political organisation.

His idea of a multitude of free services, having been transmuted in congressional backbenches from wild schemes to a timely roster of up-to-date policies, is earning shouted hosannas, rhythmic applause and standing ovations everywhere he goes; and everywhere his acolytes in the Democratic presidential sweepstakes – political miniatures really, mini-Bernies, small fry – wander.

Why a pale reflection rather than the real thing, the genuine article, a political diviner who discovered the fountain of freebies? I’m all in.
