  • Young people are open-minded about working in Beijing and Shanghai, probably because they know more about them than about Greater Bay Area cities

The results of a study recently released by the Hok Yau Club recently found that 22 per cent of students taking the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (DSE) are considering studying in Taiwan while 20 per cent would be willing to study in mainland China. The gap between the two groups has narrowed compared to last year’s results. The main reason is students have more opportunities to participate in exchange programmes with schools on the mainland.

However, most students are not interested in the Greater Bay Area and are only focused on the front-line cities like Beijing and Shanghai. They are more familiar with the education systems in those places, and are likely to be willing to work there after graduation.

They have not thought about studying in cities in the Greater Bay Area, because they are not familiar with education and the job market in that region. Giving students greater opportunities to know more about cities in the Greater Bay Area would help tackle this problem.
